Sports
Sport at St Thomas Aquinas includes the following:
An Integrated Sports Day
Grades 1 to 7 take part in sport during the academic day. All grades in the two phases take part twice a week, when they are taught general sport skills, and skills specific to a variety of team sports that are offered by St Thomas Aquinas School.
Athletics
Athletics takes place in the first term. There area a variety of disciplines such as high jump, sprints and endurance training. A variety of juniors and seniors participated in the regional competitions.
Soccer
Soccer is played in the second term. The sport is played by the primary school through to the High School.
Netball
Like soccer, netball is played in the second term and is played by the primary and high school. Within the sport we play surrounding schools and participate in many regional and local competitions.
Tennis
Tennis is a popular game as many of our children play the game .Tennis has, for many years, been an integral part of the sport at St Thomas.
Hockey
Hockey is very big at St Thomas. We have teams in all age groups, both for boys hockey and girls hockey. We have a number of excellent and experienced coaches.
Netball
Like soccer, netball is played in the second term and is played by the primary and high school. Within the sport we play surrounding schools and participate in many regional and local competitions.

About Us
On 26th May a party of Sisters arrived from Belgravia to prepare for the official opening. Rev. Mother Lucy came a week later bringing Sisters from King William’s Town, and on the 15th June the new Convent School was opened by His Excellency the Earl of Athlone and Princess Alice. The Governor General was handed a gilded key with which he unlocked the door at the main entrance and then declared the St Thomas Aquinas Convent open.

Admission Overview
- Parents seeking to make an application to St Thomas Aquinas for the admission of their children should do so as early as possible.
- The normal points of entry into St Thomas Aquinas are at the pre-primary school level (Grade R/Pre-Grade) or at the high school level (Grade 8). It is primarily in these grades, however, that St Thomas Aquinas is generally oversubscribed. Admission is possible in other grades only if and when vacancies occur.
- School-readiness (Grades 00 – 3) or entrance examinations (Grades 4 – 10) are written by all applicants.
- New learners are not accepted into Grade 11 or 12.
- The primary school caters for a total of 580 learners and the high school for a total of 280 learners. Average class sizes are 23 learners to a class in the primary school. In the high school, average class sizes are 25 learners in each class.

Foundation Phase academics (Gr 1 – 3)
HOD: Mrs Kerry van der Merwe
The foundation phase is where the skills of reading, writing and numeracy are truly taught and developed. Our aim is to develop the skills, concepts, attitudes and values that out learners will need for future independent learning. In this phase children learn to read and write, while in the next phase children read and write to learn.
We believe in a broad curriculum that develops the child holistically.

Computers Grade 8 – 9
Each Gr 9 learner completes a portfolio for each learning area (subject). A learner’s portfolio is a compulsory collection of pieces of work which shows the learner, parents and teachers the progress and achievements of the learners during the year. The pieces of evidence in the portfolio will reflect that a variety of skills have been assessed using a variety of forms of assessment. Portfolios are sent away to be examined by outside moderators for fairness. After moderation, all the marks for all the portfolios are sent to the Department of Education.
Gold bars are awarded to and worn by learners who have achieved an average of 75% or higher in the 9 main learning areas in the previous term at St Thomas Aquinas School.

- Afrikaans First Additional Language – 40%

- Mathematics – 40%
- Four other subjects – 40%
- Remaining three subjects – 30%
IEB ASSESSMENTS COMPLETED IN GRADE 9
CTA (Common Task for Assessment): One CTA is completed per learning area. Part A is completed during term time. Part B is completed as an exam.
International Benchmark Testing (in English and Mathematics) is also done to ensure that learners obtain a qualification that remains globally competitive.
Core Skills Testing: These non-curriculum-based assessment tests help educators to identify weaknesses in the application of knowledge and skills.
Science Expo: All Grade 9 learners are required to take part in the EXPO, which is a scientific research task. Expo co-ordinator: Mrs Soal.

Subject choice and career guidance
Subject choice testing is carried out by qualified psychologists and psychometrists to assist learners to make subject choices. Detailed feedback from the testing procedure is provided and the cost of testing is included in the levy. Every opportunity is taken to expos learners to career guidance seminars and displays. Personal guidance is given to learners both individually and in groups.
Grade 12 learners unite the Independent Examination Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate. Teaching and assessment is informed by and complies with IEB requirements.

Drama
Drama productions are a successful part of the St Thomas cultural program. In 2010, three of our Gr 9s wrote and produced a successful production which they will be presenting at The Grahamstown Festival of the Arts in June 2011.

Marimbas
We have junior and senior marimba teams at St Thomas, both of which have done well at marimba competitions. Our senior team participated in a National competition held in Boksburg in 2016.They are also popular performers at a variety of functions in and around Witbank. We have 3 marimba groups – Gr 6 & 7; Junior High School & Senior High School.
The marimba groups perform at special functions and have been invited to play at corporate functions. They have even played for Thabo Mbeki.
All pupils in Grades 1 – 6 attend music lessons and are taught a variety of skills. They learn to play various instruments, including the recorder, marimbas, drums, xylophones, etc.
Debating
Although we have had debating teams compete against schools in Witbank that have done well, 2010 was the first year that we competed in the Un debate competition sponsored by Education Africa. Our debaters teamed up with a lesser advantaged school outside Witbank for the provincial competition in Nelspruit – which they won. They then represented Mpumalanga at the national event in Cape Town, where they competed against other provincial teams, as well as a few international teams – they won this too: and are now flying to New York in March to compete in America. Good luck debaters.
Music Lessons
Music is a part of the academic day for the pupils until Gr 7. They learn recorder, marimba and general music. In the afternoons extra lessons take place with one of our highly qualified teachers.
PREVIOUS SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTIONS
- 2016 – ” Beauty and The Beast ” Integrated within both phases our children performed our first ever major drama production.
- 2016 – ” Red & The Wolf” grades 1-3 performed a spin on the classic fairy tale .
- 2015 – Inter House Plays learners from the three school houses performed their takes on various fairy tales .
- 2007 – “A Merry Mix of Everything” was a production that included all learners from Gr 1 – Gr 7. A beautiful, colourful, humorous and lively production, it took the audience to different countries.
- 2006 – “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was a parody of the traditional Snow White. This play was performed by a small group of high school pupils.
- 2005 – “The Great Flood” – this humorous modern-day version of Noah’s Ark delighted the audience and brought stardom to the small group of high school pupils who performed it.
Arts Festivals
Pupils from Gr 0 – 12 participate in the Local Atrium Arts Festival in different categories, including poetry recitation (in English and Afrikaans), drama, music and art. A number of the category winners and overall winners over the years have been St Thomas Aquinas pupils.
Visits to Theatre
Each year we take our pupils to see Janice Honeyman’s annual pantomime at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre. We also support local schools by seeing their productions held at the Witbank Civic Theatre.
