1974 – Our Golden Jubilee
DIFFICULT BEGINNINGS
Excerpt from the 1974 Golden Jubilee edition of the Vertias Annual Magazine
Celebration of our Golden Anniversary
The celebrations started with an open day on Saturday the 22 June followed by a “Bring and Braai” and a film show. On Sunday morning, a special Mass was held at the Cathedral, followed by a luncheon for the PTA, Sisters and Guests of Honour.
I think that the highlight of the celebrations was the play “Nemesius”, which was put on by the Matrics who were aided by the Std 9’s. Thank you to Sister Cyril and Sister Aloyisa our producers, and sister Fidelis our dress maker, without who’s hard work and assistance, the play could never have been such a success.
Another special evening for the matrics, before the grim, final examinations was the Matric Dance arranged for us by the Std 9’s. We were most impressed by their hard work and creative genius, The theme of the dance was very appropriate – “The Roaring Twenties.” We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are most grateful to the standard 9’s as well as their friends, parents and teachers who helped them.
The matrics would like to express their gratitude to all the teachers for their guidance and counsel, and also to the pupils for their support and co-operation

The “Nuns On The Hill”
Beginnings were difficult. Pupils came in very slowly, the more so because those coming from the various coal-mining areas had no transport. But we struggled on: what we could not earn teaching, we would supplement by doing needle work, in which sister Sixta excelled.
Quite often the community burnt the midnight oil stitching and sewing and knitting away to make a living.
Things improved, when we started to take in boarders; our numbers increased steadily and the “nuns on the hill” as some people called us began to find their feet.
